What is Neurofeedback?

A brain-training method that uses positive reinforcement to help the brain self-regulate, often used for ADHD.

Neurofeedback trains the brain to work more effectively. It's a treatment method for brain dysregulation, which is often associated with ADHD, and works by teaching the brain to self-regulate and function well.

How does it work?

Brain activity is monitored using electroencephalography (EEG), which picks up tiny electrical signals. Advanced technology analyses this data and feeds it back to the brain through a video game. This helps identify which brainwave frequencies should be encouraged and which should be reduced.

When the brain is working well, it gets a reward: the game speeds up, gets louder or gets bigger. When it isn't, the opposite happens.

Learning through positive reinforcement

Through this system of positive reinforcement, the brain learns to adapt for optimum function. The brain is a very sophisticated organ and gets better at this over time. All the person needs to do is relax, respond to the feedback and practise over several sessions.

About 20 sessions are usually recommended. This typically gives the brain enough training to keep self-regulating on its own.
